Every day, in every community in Southeastern Michigan, there are families struggling to afford basic needs like food, housing and child care. For those in need, United Is The Way to a brighter future. When families struggle to pay a utility bill or put food on the table, United Way’s 2-1-1 helpline connects them with the resources they need to get by.

When students risk falling behind due to a lack of access to reading materials or technology, United Way is there to distribute books, laptops and other tools.

And as families fight for a strong financial future, we offer free tax preparation assistance, transportation support, financial and employment coaching and more to help promote prosperity in our region.

Making a difference together

Across Southeastern Michigan, 42% of households are struggling to afford their basic needs. This means that four in ten of our neighbors are just barely getting by to put food on the table for their families, keep a roof over their head, and access reliable, critical healthcare. Just one missed paycheck or unexpected expense can lead many of these families to crisis. With this reality hanging over the heads of so many of our neighbors, creating long-term prosperity or investing in a child’s future can feel impossible.

Eastern Michigan University and United Way for Southeastern Michigan are teaming up to help turn the tide: to help families out of crisis and into a state of stability; and from stability to long-term prosperity.

Over a hundred years ago, the United Way for Southeastern Michigan formed under the notion that all of us can accomplish more together than we can apart. In the time since, United Way has only strengthened that notion by turning the goodwill of its donors, volunteers, and advocates into a space where no household is left needlessly to collapse. By working with a vast network of partner organizations, United Way brings all stakeholders to the table to coordinate care for those who need it most and maximize community resources.
